Includes primarily the business and personal papers of Samuel Welles such as personal and political correspondence, business papers such as receipts, invoices, account looks, deeds held for mortgage, ship papers, bills of lading. Also includes business records for the Eagle Manufacturing Co. as well as other companies in which Samuel invested after the Embargo of 1807-1809 forced him out of shipping and trading. The collection also includes Glastonbury town records such as tax lists, society papers and other records used by family members in their various public and private positions, especially for his son Gideon who later served as Secretary of the Navy under Abraham Lincoln.

A native of Glastonbury, Conn., Gideon Welles began his career as a lawyer but took up journalism as a profession, founding the Hartford Times, which he also edited, in 1826.
